Traditional hyperconverged clusters often use dedicated data centre switches for storage traffic between nodes. Those switches provide scalability, but they also require configuration, specialist knowledge, rack space and additional investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For smaller Azure Local environments, a switchless architecture can provide an alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DataON offers four-node switchless solutions that connect the storage networks between the nodes directly. This can reduce infrastructure requirements while still providing a resilient Azure Local platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But switchless does not mean networkless, and it is not the right design for every environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>What does switchless mean?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Azure Local nodes exchange large amounts of data for storage replication and cluster operations. This internal traffic is often referred to as east-west traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a switched architecture, this traffic passes through dedicated network switches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a switchless configuration, the nodes are connected directly to one another for storage traffic. Each node has redundant connections to the other nodes in the cluster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">External traffic, such as user access, management traffic and communication with Azure, still requires physical network switches. The switchless design only removes the dedicated switching layer for internal storage communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Why consider four nodes?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two-node switchless clusters are often used for small branch or edge deployments. <a href=\"https:\/\/dataon.io\/reduce-complexity-and-cost-increase-performance-and-reduce-latency-with-dataon-four-node-switchless-solutions-for-azure-local\/\">A four-node<\/a> configuration offers more compute and storage capacity while preserving the ability to tolerate node maintenance or failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can make it suitable for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>manufacturing locations;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>warehouses and logistics sites;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>healthcare facilities;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>regional offices;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>retail environments;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>compact datacentres;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>edge locations with limited rack space.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A four-node cluster can provide a useful middle ground between a small edge appliance and a larger switched datacentre platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Potential advantages<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Lower switching costs<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Removing dedicated storage switches can reduce hardware, optics, cabling and support costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exact saving depends on the network design. Switchless should therefore not be presented as automatically cheaper, but it can remove a significant infrastructure component.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Fewer configuration dependencies<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Storage switches require configuration for areas such as VLANs, quality of service, RDMA and redundancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Direct node connections reduce the number of devices involved in the storage path. This can simplify deployment and troubleshooting, provided the cabling and adapter configuration are well documented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Low-latency storage traffic<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because nodes communicate directly, east-west storage traffic does not need to pass through an additional switching layer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For workloads that depend on predictable local storage performance, this can be an attractive characteristic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>A compact footprint<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Switchless solutions can be useful in locations without a full datacentre network design or dedicated storage switches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is especially relevant at the edge, where simplicity and physical footprint often matter as much as theoretical scalability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>The trade-offs<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Switchless architecture has clear limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most important is scale. A full-mesh design becomes increasingly complex as nodes are added because every node needs redundant direct connections to the other nodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/architecture\/hybrid\/azure-local-baseline\">Azure Local<\/a> switchless configurations are therefore intended for small clusters, with four nodes representing the practical upper end of the current architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scaling the cluster later is also less flexible than in a switched environment. Organisations should size the platform carefully and consider future capacity before deployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A four-node switchless cluster also requires a substantial number of network ports in each server. The design may remove storage switches, but it does not remove the need for suitable adapters, cables and careful network planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When switchless is a good fit<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A switchless DataON solution is worth considering when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the environment will remain relatively compact;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>four nodes provide sufficient long-term capacity;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>internal storage switching represents unnecessary cost or complexity;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>low latency is important;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the location has limited networking infrastructure;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the organisation wants a repeatable edge or branch design.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is less suitable when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>rapid scale-out beyond four nodes is expected;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the cluster is part of a larger datacentre fabric;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>capacity requirements are uncertain;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>operational teams prefer standardised switched networking across all platforms;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the environment requires future expansion without recabling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Less infrastructure still requires good design<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main benefit of switchless architecture is not that networking becomes irrelevant. It is that the network can be simplified around a clearly defined use case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Incorrect port configuration, cabling or traffic separation can still affect performance and availability. The solution therefore needs to be designed and validated as a complete system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DataON provides prevalidated Azure Local configurations.
