HPE Smart Storage Battery – A New Version of the Smart Storage Battery Has Been Released For Use in HPE Gen9 and Gen10 Series Servers
HPE Smart Storage Batteries provide backup power to Smart Array Cache and NVDIMMs in the event of a server power failure. The backup power is provided for up to 2 minutes, which allows data in volatile memory (DIMM) to be stored to non-volatile memory (flash). When the battery output is disabled, the smart array cache is also disabled.
A new HPE Smart Storage Battery (version 2) was introduced late in 2017 because the controller board in the Smart Storage Battery released with HPE Gen9 servers and used in early HPE Gen10 servers is now End-of-Life (EOL).
Your server may still be using a version 1 Smart Storage Battery, with an older date code and may jeopardize your data protection. Smart Storage Battery replacements will continue to be fix-on-failure or pre-failure as identified while running the iLO 4 2.55 firmware (or later) for Gen9 servers or any iLO 5 firmware for Gen10 servers.
