Why DataON Premier Solutions+ matters for Azure Local
Azure Local is becoming a more important part of Microsoft’s infrastructure strategy. It is no longer simply a hyperconverged platform for organisations that want to keep a few workloads on-premises. It is developing into a broader foundation for hybrid infrastructure, sovereign environments, edge computing and locally hosted cloud services.
That development also changes the role of the hardware underneath it.
Microsoft has introduced a Premier Solution category for Azure Local. DataON is one of the manufacturers offering systems within this category. But what does that designation actually mean for organisations planning an Azure Local environment?
Azure Local is more than certified hardware
An Azure Local deployment brings Azure technology and management capabilities into a customer-owned datacentre, branch location or edge environment.
Workloads run locally, while organisations can use Azure services for areas such as monitoring, governance, security, backup and lifecycle management. This is particularly relevant when applications need low latency, data must remain at a specific location or public cloud connectivity cannot always be guaranteed.
However, the platform consists of more than Microsoft software. Hardware, firmware, drivers, networking and update processes all need to work together.
A server may technically meet the requirements for Azure Local, but that does not automatically make deployment or long-term management straightforward.
What is a Premier Solution?
Premier Solutions are the most deeply integrated category within the Azure Local portfolio.
These systems are developed and tested in close cooperation with Microsoft. The objective is not simply to certify individual server components, but to validate the complete solution across hardware, software, firmware, deployment and updates.
For customers, this can provide several practical advantages:
- more extensive testing of the complete platform;
- coordinated hardware and software updates;
- standardised deployment workflows;
- closer alignment between Microsoft and the hardware vendor;
- access to selected Azure Local scenarios that depend on Premier-class hardware.
This does not mean that every organisation automatically needs a Premier Solution. It does mean that organisations with demanding availability, compliance or lifecycle requirements should consider the difference carefully.
DataON Premier Solutions+
DataON adds its own services and tooling to Microsoft’s Premier Solution model. The company refers to this combined proposition as Premier Solutions+.
The proposition includes DataON hardware for Azure Local, supported deployment workflows and services for migration, training and ongoing support.
That matters because most Azure Local challenges do not occur in isolation. A technically correct cluster still needs to fit within the organisation’s existing network, identity model, backup strategy, operational processes and application landscape.
The real question is therefore not only whether the hardware is certified. It is whether the complete environment can be deployed, updated and supported as one system.
Why this is relevant in Europe
European organisations increasingly need to decide where workloads and data should run.
For some applications, public cloud is the logical option. Other workloads need to remain close to users, machinery or data sources. Regulatory requirements, business continuity and data sovereignty can also make local processing necessary.
Azure Local supports that mixed reality. It provides a consistent Microsoft platform without forcing every workload into a public cloud region.
DataON’s systems are especially relevant for organisations that want a Microsoft-focused platform without the overhead of a large, general-purpose infrastructure stack.
As DataON’s European preferred partner, XCES adds the regional layer around that technology. We help organisations assess workloads, design the architecture, migrate existing environments and manage Azure Local after deployment.
Premier does not remove the need for good architecture
A Premier designation reduces certain technology and lifecycle risks, but it does not replace architectural choices.
Organisations still need to determine:
- which workloads belong on Azure Local;
- how much capacity and resilience are required;
- whether the environment needs to remain connected to Azure;
- how backup and disaster recovery will be organised;
- how the platform integrates with existing Microsoft services;
- who will monitor and manage the environment.
That is where the combination of DataON, Microsoft and XCES becomes valuable.
DataON supplies a tightly integrated Azure Local platform. Microsoft provides the hybrid cloud technology and management layer. XCES translates both into an environment that fits the organisation’s technical and operational reality.
Building an Azure Local platform that can be managed
Azure Local is becoming more capable, but also broader. New use cases around sovereign infrastructure, local AI, virtual desktops and container platforms make the underlying architecture increasingly important.
Choosing a platform should therefore not start with a server specification. It should start with the workloads, operational requirements and long-term infrastructure strategy.
XCES helps organisations determine whether a DataON Premier Solution is the right foundation and, more importantly, how to turn that foundation into a manageable hybrid environment.
